II: Raag Madhumalati Jor and Jhala

from EPIPHANIES by Arjun K. Verma Sitar

about

Raag Madhumalati is a modern late afternoon/evening raag created by maestro Ali Akbar Khan. One meaning of its title is "Garland of Honey." "Garland" may refer in part to the fact that this melody combines elements of several other raags.

Though such a combination is vastly more than the sum of its parts, one can see elements in this raag drawn from other traditional melodies including Madhuvanti, Kafi, Patdeep, and Bilaskhani Todi.

This track is paired with the preceding one in Raag Madhuvanti, as Madhumalati draws many features in particular from that raag, including a somewhat related mood.

This rendition explores the jor and jhala sections, which introduce simple rhythm and then gradually increase its tempo and complexity until the end.

This recording is the first known published rendition of Raag Madhumalati on sitar.
